Origin and Development I C G V 86143 was developed at ICRISAT A s i a Center, I n d i a . It o r i g i n a t e d f r om a cross made i n t he 1983 r a i n y season between I C G S 44 and an F8 Spanish b r e e d i ng l i n e d e r i v e d f r om the cross Robut 33-1 x NC Ac 2821. I C G S 44 ( I C G V 87128) is an ICRISAT-bred, h i g h - y i e l d i n g , medium-duration c u l t i v a r that was released in 1988 f o r postrainy-season c u l t i v a t i o n i n I n d i a . Robut 33-1 (also k n o w n as K a d i r i 3) i s a short-duration V i r g i n i a c u l t i v a r released in I n d i a . NC Ac 2821 i s a V i r g i n ia germplasm l i n e f r om N o r t h Carolina State U n i v e r s i t y , USA. F r om an F3 plant progeny of a h i g h - y i e l d i n g F2 plant of the cross, phen o t y p i c a l l y s i m i l a r plants were selected and b u l k e d at harvest. T h i s process of b u l k i n g p h e n o t y p i c a l l y s i m i l a r plants was repeated u n t i l the F8 generation, when the b u l k became homogeneous.
