Investment in agricultural research has diverse goals, but is ultimately targeted at economic growth and social wel fare. Several studies in the past have confirmed that returns on inve s tment in agr icul tural research are quite high. We believe that ICRISAT's research efforts on its mandate c rops—sorghum, millets , chickpea, pigeonpea, and groundnut—are responsible for a large number of tangible and intangible benefits at different levels, wherever these crops are grown .
