Weed Management in Organic Soybean

Weeds are the major problem in soybean crop accounting for about 30-70 per cent yield loss hence there is a need for economic management of weeds without hampering soil health and environment. Soybean is sensitive to early weed competition hence weeds are needed to be managed in early 30-40 days of sowing. The weeds that emerge after 40 days are smothered by the crop itself. The annual grasses are Echinochloa colonum (sama), Dactyloctenium aegyptium (makra), Eleusina indica (kodai), Digitaria species etc. while Celosia argentia (safed murg) is important broad leaf weed. Cyperus rotundus (motha), Cyperus dactylon (doob grass) and Sorghum halepense (banchari) are important among perennial weeds.

 

Control measures:

  1. Basal application of neem cake@3-4ton/ha is beneficial.
  2. In situ mulching with weeds: Hand weeding is done at 30DAS and thereafter, uprooted weeds are spread in between soybean rows.  This checks further emergence of weeds and thereafter crop smothering effect also prevents further emergence and growth of weeds.

Conclusion: Soybean is sensitive to early weed competition accounting for about 30-70 per cent economic yield loss hence in situ mulching with weeds not only protect crop from weed infestation but also improves crop yield economically.
