Training/Workshop on vKVK and KVK-Net on 18 December 2012 at Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour

                                          

Introduction

The IIT-Kanpur agropedia team organized a training programme on vKVK (Voice Krishi Vigyan Kendra) and KVK-Net (Krishi Vigyan Knowledge Network) at Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour on 18 December 2012. In this training programmeKVK scientists from different KVK’s like KVK Sheikhpure, Munger, Rohtas, Saharsa, Araria, Katihar, Kaimur, Bhagalpur, Sabour, Kishanganj, Banka, Jalalgarh, Aurangabad, Nalanda, Patna, Lakhisarai, Arwal, Jahanabad, Khagaria, Jamui, Madhopura,  took part and showed keen interest in learning the features and functionalities of both the websites. Our agricultural portal ‘agropedia’ was also discussed in brief. agropedia is an online knowledge repository for information related to agriculture in India. This national portal, designed as an "agricultural Wikipedia" hosts wide range of agricultural information on a variety of crops, with an aim to empower farmers with crop information. In total 21 KVK’s of different districts of Bihar were trained. 31 KVK experts attended the training programme. The agropedia team included two agricultural experts Dr. Vinod Kumar and Dr. Sharwan Shukla.

Dr. Vinod Kumar an agri expert from IIT-K gave demonstration on vKVK. vKVK stands for “Voice Krishi Vigyan Kendra", is an unique web and cell phone based multimodal agricultural advisory  system. vKVK makes use of existing vast extension network of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in the country and allows the extension officers to send SMSs and voice based agro-advisories in local dialect to the farmers’ mobile phone. This service is implemented in four states including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Initially, the service was started in 24 KVKs  and is now  being up-scaled in 80 KVKs covering more than 20,000 farmers in whole of UP, Uttarakhand, 8 KVKs of Karnataka and 2 KVK’s of Andhra Pradesh. vKVK primarily offers two extension services viz.On the other hand, KVK-Net is an Agricultural Knowledge sharing platform which is sponsored by ICAR and is developed by ZPD-4 and IIT- Kanpur. It is meant for the experts at KVK and has interaction tools Blogs, Discussion Board, Event, Community, Chat and Private message. KVK-Net is a platform designed for the experts at KVKs for sharing information and experiences and where the experts of one region can interact with the experts of other region. Currently, it is launched in U.P and Uttaranchal region only. After, its success it is planned to extend to the other states of India also.                                                   

Demonstration on vKVK

This was followed by a demonstration on vKVK. vKVK primarily offers two extension services viz. E2F (expert to farmer) and F2E (farmer to expert). In E2F, the agricultural expert can record and send messages to a set of registered farmers using a web based interface (Web to mobile) or a mobile phone (mobile to mobile). In F2E, a farmer can call up and speak to the expert of their respective KVKs (mobile to mobile). Similar to voice, the agricultural expert can also send short messages (SMS) to the designated farmers of the concerned KVKs.

                        

IVR (Interactive Voice Response) system is developed: In this system two phone numbers are provided through which the registered farmers and experts can interact with each other.

Presentation on KVK-Net

KVK-Net - (Krishi Vigyan Knowledge Network) a new platform developed for the KVK Scientists. It is a common platform where the experts at one KVK can interact with experts at other KVKs distributed throughout the country.

In the presentation various functional features of KVK-Net was explained. This platform has various options which make it interactive. To register in the portal one has to first create his account. User can send and receive messages, create blogs & discussion forums, comment on blogs & forums of other people and chat with other users online. Events can be created to schedule a meeting or workshop. Events are followed by Community. Under community there are seven sections in total which includes Corp Science, Horticulture, Extension, HSc. & Economics, NRM, Agriculture Engineering, Animal Husbandry and Fishery. Users can discuss issues as per the community in the relevant community page, like in crop science community the users can talk about all the crops, in the animal husbandry community people can discuss on the disease which affect animals and so on. To honour and recognize the Achievements, a separate page has been created with the sections Innovation and Success Story, where a user can write his/her success stories and share their experiences with others. Discussion Board is a forum, where a user can post any query. The KVK Directory consists of zone wise distribution of all the Krishi Vigyan Kendra's situated in India. The users can click on the links and can get detail information of the KVK of that particular zone. Users Location shows the place and the area a users belongs to. Any user one can send messages through Private messages and in the Message section a user can check his sent and received messages. The users can interact with the online users through chat. A chat window opens as you click on the name of the online user's. Any user can send invitation through Invite a friend and recommend a friend to join KVK-Net platform.

Hands on session

The demo was followed by the Hands on session. In this session the participants browsed through vKVK and the KVK-Net platforms and created their own account. They went through all the features of provided in the platform and also uploaded some contents and created their own blog entries. This session is mainly conducted to keep a check that the users do not face any difficulty in accessing the site.

                                        

Feedback

  • Voice messages was preferred a better option, than SMS, for transferring information.
  • Voice KVK services were appreciated by the KVK experts.
  • All KVK’s showed keen interest for implementing this service in their KVK’s
  • The Director extension education and Dean agriculture of both the universities were interested to start the vKVK services (E2F, F2E and E2E) in the KVK’s.
