Training/Workshop on agropedia, openagri and vkvk at JNKVV

The training workshop was organized by IIT-Kanpur, the agropedia team in collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidayalya, (JNKVV) Jabalpur, M.P . The workshop was organized with a view of knowledge sharing and demonstration of the agropedia portal- an online knowledge repository for information related to agriculture in India. This national portal, hosts wide range of agricultural information on a variety of crops, with an aim to empower farmers with crop information. More than 60 users participated in the workshop which comprises of Scientists, KVK experts and research scholars. The IIT-K agropedia team consisted of one technical person Mr. Jeetendra Singh and Dr. Vimlesh Yadav, Dr. Sharwan Shukla and Dr. Rahul Rai were among the agricultural scientists.

The inaugural session

The inaugural session started with a welcome speech of Vice Chancellor, Prof. G. Kalloo. He gave a brief idea of agropedia portal and on how to implement the technology in agriculture sector according to climatic condition, which varies from state to state and region to region. Dr. P. K. Jain, Director of Extension Services, Dr. T.R. Sharma, Scientist Extension, Dr Hrada and Dr. Pahalwan, highlighted the recent trends of technology dissemination and innovation in agricultural field.


Presentation on agropedia portal

The entire workshop was divided into two sessions. The demo session and the hands on session. In the first part of the workshop Mr. Jeetendra Singh gave online presentation on agropedia clearly defining the concept of semantic web application, he drew the distinction between agropedia and other websites on Indian agriculture. He focused on two types of searches semantic search and syntactic search available on agropedia and the difference between certified and uncertified contents. He demonstrated the homepage of agropedia covering all its features like Knowledge Models available on the site on ten different crops. Next in the menu option come Extension Material which includes LibraryCrop Calendar, Dos and Don'ts and Package of Practices on different crops which is a new release in agropedia and is an ongoing process. The Interactions section includes agrowiki, agroblog, forum and agrochat. He demonstrated the process  to become a registered user, upload contents and images, create own wiki page on agrowiki, writing a blog entry on agroblog and posting any query related matters on agroforum. In agrochat a user can chat with the online agricultural scientist and discuss on any subject or clear their doubts and query.



Dr. Vimlesh Yadav described openagri - an open access agricultural research repository is a research space provided agropedia. It is a content management platform where one can upload their Thesis work, Conference Papers, Journal Articles, Book Chapters, Books, and Conference Proceedings and much more. openagri repository is a open platform to submit any kind of agricultural published material. After this agrotags and agrotagger which is also an important component of openagri. Agrotags is a proper subset of Agrovoc which enables semantic searching and retrieval. Agrotags are specially designed with tagging in mind and provides semantic interlinking between documents. Agrotagger allows assigning key phrases automatically from Agrotags.


The vKVK (virtual Krishi Vigyan Kendra) part was demonstrated by Dr. Sharwan Shukla. vKVK is a platform that provides facilities like sending messages i.e   text messages and voice messages directly to the productive and general category farmers for the services which includes sending advisory, alert and private messages.  The messages are created according to zone wise, and then they are forwarded to the farmers of that particular zone. vKVK platform is created with a view to help farmers and guide them to follow the proper cropping system, irrigation system, insect pest and the precautions taken if any disease spread, climatic conditions like drought, flood etc and insect damage is forecasted that may eradicate the growing crops.

The Hands On session

With the Hands On session we come to the end of the training workshop. In this session the participants gain the practical knowledge of all that was online demonstrated on agropedia. Every participants get chance to browse through the agropedia site. They browse through the whole site and get familiar to its features and functions. They are trained practically on the usage of the site, the methods of creating account, uploading content and image in the content, writing comment or replying to a comment, creating wikipage, blog entry, and forum topic, agrochat, using multilingual editor and inviting their friend on agropedia site and share their agricultural related knowledge and the lastest developments and technologies being used in agriculture. The agropedia team is there to assist them whenever they face any difficulty in accessing the site. Some of the participants even shared their experiences in agroblog, agrowiki and raised queries in agroforum. In this session the participants access the portal on their own and check the features, functions and usage of the site demonstrated earlier.

The whole workshop was conducted very well and it remained a wonderful experience for both which includes the participants from JNKV University and also for the agropedia team. The agropedia team is grateful to the institute for the cooperation we received from the University.
