Report on Training programme on vKVK and

KVK-Net at KVK's Dehradun and Saharanpur

On 4th and 5th July 2011, agropedia team visited KVK Dehradun and KVK Saharanpur. After a general briefing of the work going on in the agropedia project, the team demonstrated the working of two IT portals viz. vKVK and KVK-Net. Three agricultural experts Dr. Vinod Kumar, K.K.Dubey and Suneel Pandey from agropedia team visited the KVK's. In KVK Dehradun 13 KVK experts attended the training programme and in KVK Saharanpur 10 KVK experts took training on  KVK-Net.

Mr. Suneel Pandey of IIT-K gave a live demonstration on vKVK (virtual Krishi Vigyan Kendra). In his demonstration he described in detail the method of sending messages to the progressive and general farmers. vKVK is a platform that provides facilities like sending messages i.e. text messages and voice messages directly to the productive and general category farmers for the services which includes sending advisory, alert and private messages. The messages are created according to zone, and then they are forwarded to the farmers of that particular zone. vKVK platform is created with a view to help farmers and guide them to follow the proper cropping system, irrigation system, and the precautions to be taken if any disease spread, insect damage, sudden changes in climatic conditions like drought, flood etc  is forecasted.

Later on, he demonstrated the KVK-Net portal. KVK-Net is a social networking site for the Researchers, scientists and other agriculture experts. It is a platform where the experts of one region can interact with the experts of other region. Currently, it is planned to launch it in U.P and Uttaranchal region only. After, its success it is planned to extend it to the other states of India. The AKNet portal has various options which make it interactive. A user has to first create his account. User can send and receive messages, create blogs & discussion forums, comment on blogs & forums of other people and chat with other users online. Events can be created to schedule a meeting or workshop. Events are followed by Community. Community section is under review and would undergo change in terms of the theme on which communities are to be formed. Presently, it includes Potato, Rice, Fruit, and KVK communities available in the portal. Users can discuss issues as per the community in the relevant community page, like in fruit community the users can talk about all the fruit crops, in the Potato community people can discuss on the disease which affect the growth and production of Potato and so on. In the Newsroom section any agriculture related news item can be shared. To honour and recognize the Innovations, a separate page has been created with the title "Innovation" where a user can write his/her success stories or even of others. Alerts will display the urgent information that needs to be circulated like any sudden attack of insect pest, disease spread, climatic conditions like drought, flood etc. Discussion Board is a forum, where a user can post any query. The KVK Directory consists of zone wise distribution of all the Krishi Vigyan Kendra's situated in India. The users can click on the links and can get detail information of the KVK of that particular zone. Users Location shows the place and the area a users belongs to. Through Private messages one can send private message to any user and in the Message section a user can check his sent and received messages. The users can interact with the online users through chat. A chat window opens as you click on the name of the online user's. Any user can send invitation to friend through Invite a friend and recommend a friend to join KVK-Net portal.

Suggestions of both the KVK's are as follows:

The following suggestions were given by the participants of KVK Dehradun:

1.      Voicemail would be a better option, than SMS, for transferring information.

2.      Variation in climatic conditions in regions of Uttarakhand is high. Messages to be sent as per the requirement of the individual districts for higher effectiveness.

3.      Communities in KVK Expert Network to be formed according to the subject specialization and not according to crops.

4.      Some names were suggested for KVK Expert Network:

a.      Farmer's Book

b.      Farmer's Agro Advisory Service

The following suggestions were given by the KVK Saharanpur participants:

1.      Communities to be formed as per the subject specialization.

2.      Regular trainings for better orientation and developing confidence among the participants in using the facilities.

3.      More sub-categories to be included under specialization details in account opening form of KVK Expert Network.
