ABOUT US: The Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University (www.raubikaner.org) is authorized to provide instruction in Agriculture and Allied Sciences which include Horticulture, Veterinary & Animal Sciences, Home Science and Agri-Business Management. It has also been authorized in other fields of agricultural learning, which the University may deem fit. It is empowered to maintain academic institutions, dealing with agriculture, veterinary and animal sciences, home science, agri-business management, etc., to carry out instruction in these faculties, hold examinations, and confer degree, diplomas, pertaining to professional qualifications. Rajasthan Agricultural University concisely aims to impart and promote agricultural knowledge to Modern Indian students. The University has also been authorized to carry out research programmes through University faculty and enrolled students, and confer academic distinctions, on persons who bring about technological interventions of economic importance. The university provides educational opportunities to the students through its various curricula and enables them to develop knowledge base, acquire decision-making skills related to their chosen fields of expertise, and to express themselves professionally. 

EDUCATION/ACADEMICS: Academic programmes (UG and PG)

The university processes two colleges of agriculture, one college each of and an Home Science and Veterinary and Animal Sciences institute of Agri-Business Management. The academic programmes are offered at two places i.e., Jobner and Bikaner campuses.

Jobner campus, the oldest institution of Agriculture, in the state of Rajasthan offers B.Sc, M.Sc and Ph.D degree programmes in the faculty of agriculture only, and the Bikaner campus with 3 colleges and one institute of Agri-business management offers degree programmes in four faculties, i.e., agriculture, veterinary and animal sciences, home science and Agri-business management.

Institute of Agri business management offers only master's degree programme (MBA) and college of home science offers under graduate and masters degree programmes

Undergraduate programmes
 The university offers 3 undergraduate programmes, one each in the faculties of agriculture, veterinary and animal sciences and home science. The B.Sc (AG) and B.Sc (home science) programmes are of four years (eight semesters) duration which include one semester of Rural agricultural work experience (RAWE) programme. The B.V.Sc and A.H programme is of five years (10 semesters) duration which includes one semester of internship.

 
Postgraduate programme

The master's degree programme is being offered in 14 different disciplines in the faculty of veterinary and animal sciences, ten different disciplines in the faculty of agriculture and 3 different disciplines in the faculty of home science. The institute of Agri business management (IABM) offers a master's degree programme in Agri business management. The doctoral degree programmes are being offered in 9 different disciplines each of the faculty of veterinary and animal sciences and in the faculty of agriculture and in one department of the faculty of home sciences. The residential requirement for masters programme is four semesters, while it is five semesters for a doctoral programme.

 
Institute of Agri Business Management

The IABM offers a master's programme in Agri business management with specialization in four different areas viz., input supply industry, food industry, horticulture industry and livestock industry. This programme is being offered from the year 2000 with an intake capacity of 25 students and in addition, five seats are available for industry/NRI-sponsored students.

 

RESEARCH: The major research work is being carried out under the overall guidance of Directorate of Research on various Agricultural Research Stations, sub-stations and college campuses spread over ten agro-climatic zones. The Directorate of Research at Bikaner plays an effective role in achieving the desired research goals, augmenting resource mobilization and maintaining a close liaison with the line departments of the State, ICAR and other R&D organizations of the country. The Director of Research is responsible for planning, co-ordinating, monitoring and evaluating need based production oriented agricultural research, both basic and applied, at the research stations and sub-stations as well as the teaching campuses.

The Directorate of Research at Bikaner plays an effective role in achieving the desired research goals, augmenting resource mobilization and maintaining a close liaison with the line departments of the State, ICAR and other R&D organizations of the country. The Director of Research is responsible for planning; coordinating, monitoring and evaluating need based production oriented agricultural research, both basic and applied, at the research stations and sub-stations as well as the teaching campuses.

The SKRAU scientists have contributed immensely by evolving many high yield potential varieties of crops which have become popular even in other states. Some of the important varieties/hybrids developed during the last two years include RMO 225 of Mothbean, Ganga 8 and RMG 344 of Mungbean, RC 101 of Cowpea, RD 2552 of Barley, RT 127 of Seseame and HNG 10 of Groundnut.

Agricultural technology in other fields, namely, crop production and protection, arid horticulture and soil science has also been developed to the farmers' benefit and to boost agricultural production. SKRAU also undertakes breeder seed production to contribute towards production of certified seed of improved varieties of crops to meet the farmers' demand for seed. A number of All India Co-ordinated Projects are operating at the seven Agricultural Research Stations under SKRAU. The major emphasis under these projects is on development of high yielding varieties having resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. The Veterinary and Animal Science Research Programmes are being pursued at two constituent campuses of the University viz., College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Bikaner and SKN College of Agriculture, Jobner (Jaipur) and on three Livestock Research Stations, namely, LRS, Chandan (Jaisalmer), LRS, Biknaer and LRS, Nohar (Hanumangarh).

EXTENSION: The Directorate of Extension Education helps in promoting agricultural development in the State through quick transfer of technology by providing training, advisory and farm information to professional extension personnel of line departments and farmers. It also involves in assessment, refinement & adoption of technology through on farm testing and front-line demonstration. Being a crucial institution of the University, the Directorate provides guidelines, monitor and evaluate the extension programmes of KVKs functioning under SKRAU. The directorate also extends its support to the State departments through farm information by publishing literature on different disciplines of agriculture and allied subjects. Thus three principal functional areas of the Directorate of Extension Education, SKRAU, at present are, training, advisory and communication. The directorate has a team of multi disciplinary scientists who work in participatory mode in close co-ordination with the Department of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Horticulture, Forestry, Co-operatives, Panchayat Samities and other agencies engaged for betterment of rural people with following broad objectives -

a) To formulate and impart in-service training to different categories of officers and functionaries from line departments of Govt. of Rajasthan and Non-Government organizations.

b) To conduct short and long duration vocational training's for front-line farmers, farm women, youth and school dropouts of the State.

c) To assess and refine the latest agricultural technology through front-line demonstration for their wider adoption.

d) To provide farm information services through various extension activities including literature for quick dissemination of technology.
