The monthly data on modal prices of Greengram were collected from Gadag regulated market for the last 20 years and were analyzed by employing rigorous time series models and the prices for Greengram in Gadag market for the months of September, October and November months were forecasted by the Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell, Department of Agribusiness Management, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad.

Kharif grown green gram, is gradually entering into the markets. But, uncertain prices at harvest have made the farmers to think about the time and place of selling their produce.  In order to help the farmers to come out of helm of affairs and to take rational decision regarding selling of their produce, the market intelligence cell undertook a study to come out with reliable forecast prices that would prevail in Gadag market at the time of harvest.  The opinions of experienced traders, agricultural scientists and progressive farmers were collected to fine tune the forecast prices.  The prices in other major markets for Green gram were also collected other than collecting the future prices from National Commodities and Derivatives exchange of India (NCDEX) to come up with accurate price forecasts.

The prices are ruling at Rs.4000 per quintal in Gadag market at present. According to the price forecasts in Gadag regulated market and keeping in view of the opinions and suggestions of the experienced persons in this crop, the prices of this crop, per quintal in Gadag region, expected to range between Rs. 3800-4200 in the month of September, Rs.4000-4300 in the month of October and Rs.4500-4700 in November month. The minimum support price announced by government for Greengram for this year is Rs.3500 per quintal. So farmers are advised to sell their produce during November to get better price. Bold seeded, cleaned, well dried grains are going to fetch higher prices in the market. So farmers are advised to keep all these suggestions in mind while cultivating the crop and preparing the product for the market.
