Mu l t i p l i c a t i o n r a t e s , through sequent ial breeder , f o u n d a t i o n , and c e r t i f i e d seeds tages , are h i g h : 3 kg of seed are adequate f o r sowing 1 h a , subsequent l y producing 1 tonne of clean seed. Nucleus seed p l o t s (stage 0 ) , sown f o r regenerat ion once every 4 y e a r s , shoul d be e f f e c t i v e l y i s o - l a t e d . They shoul d be between 0, 1 and 0.2 ha i n s i z e , and contai n at l e a s t 3000 p l a n t s . Plot s of breeder seed (stage 1)shoul d s imi l a r l y be we l l i s o l a t e d , and r i g o r o u s l y inspected and rogued, and not more than 1% of o f f - t y p e s shoul d be permit t e d a t f i n a l i n s p e c t i o n . Pl o t sizes are normal l y between 0. 1 and 0.5 ha, according to how much c e r t i f i e d seed is req u i r e d , using a conservat ive mu l t i p l i c a - t i o n f a c t o r of X200. At the end of the foundat ion seed stage (stage 2 ) , through p r o t e c t i v e per imeter p l a n t i n g , i n s p e c t i o n , and rogueing, o f f - t y p e s shoul d be less than 2%. At the f i n a l c e r t i f i e d seed stage ( 3 ) , the permi t ted l e v e l o f o f f - t y p e s i s 5%. Si x point s of guidance are given f o r extension s t a f f to pass on to farmers who (as may be expected) at tempt to mu l t i p l y t h e i r own improved seed.
