Price Forecast for Cotton of North Eastern Karnataka: 2012-13

The prices of medium staple cotton for 2011-12 season was hovering between ` 3,300 to ` 4,500 per quintal. But there was a declining trend observed from February 2012 and since then the price has stabilized around ` 3500 per quintal. The prices of cotton are influenced much more by the national and international production scenario, demand and supply, export, etc rather than local conditions. Due to stable prices of medium staple cotton during 2011-12, it is expected that the production would remain constant during ensuing season of 2012-13.

Under these circumstances, the medium staple cotton prices for 2012-13 season is predicted at Rs. 3,500 to Rs. 3,900 per quintal. The Government of India has already announced minimum support price (MSP) of cotton for medium staple cotton is ` 3,300 per quintal and ` 3900 per quintal for long staple cotton.
