Price Forecast for Chilli of North Eastern Karnataka: 2012-13

Karnataka contributes about nine percent of chilli production in India and third largest state after Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The important markets in Karnataka are Byadgi, Dharwad, Hubli, Bellary and Gadag.

Generally prices of chilli starts declining from the month of January till May due to peak arrivals. However, from June-July onwards, prices starts moving upward due to increased demand in the export market and end of arrival season. Chilli production in Karnataka in the last few years was in the range of 10.50-13.20 lakh tonnes while in 2011-12, production has increased to 13.50 lakh tonnes. As per projections for 2012, chilli is showing an increase in ending stocks of 3 lakh tonnes which would sharply affect the prices in 2012-13 season.

There may be increase in price in July-August 2012 but that may not be stable for long. Therefore farmers may realize high prices in the range of ` 5,000 to ` 6,000 per quintal during the initial months from the new crop arrivals.
