Online Database and Information Retrieval System for AICRP on  MULLaRP

Under the all-India Co-ordinated Research Project on MULLaRP, trials are conducted in all three seasons (viz., Kharif, Rabi and Spring & Summer) every year in plant breeding, agronomy, plant pathology, entomology, microbiology and nematology disciplines. Voluminous data on different aspects of coordinated trials are being generated, recorded, analyzed and disseminated in the form of Annual Reports in different locations. In the present manual system of data collection, compilation, analysis and report preparation, the problems like lack of complete information at one place, delay in retrieving the data from respective centers, problems in accurate and correct data analysis and delay in preparation of final report before the workshop were observed. Hence a online database and information retrieval system for AICRP on MULLaRP was developed with an aim to reduce the time and cost on collection, compilation, data analysis, retrieval and report generation for plant breeding trials. At first instance, efforts were made to use plant breeding data as it confined to more than 60% of total trials.

The system has been developed using ASP.NET with C# as the front-end coding and SQL server 2005 as database development. MULLaRP online information retrieval system has 3 basic functional modules viz., Data Entry & Submission module, Data Analysis module and Report Generation module. Data Entry & Submission module has the facilities of accepting data booklet details, general notes on growing conditions and data on yield (kg/ha), days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, 100-seeds weight (gm.) and plant height (cm). Data Analysis perform RBD analysis. Report Generation module generates the reports of information sheet and location wise data based on crop, trial, zone & location. The system is designed to be very user friendly and is completely menu-driven with options for assigning login ID’s & Passwords for centre in-charges and reporting scientists. Add/Edit/Delete options for center, variety code and allotment of season, year, crop and trial to reporting scientist.

This system is developed using data collected from trials (AVT1, AVT2, IVT, AVT1 + AVT2) conducted at 5 agro-climatic zones – ( North-West Plain Zone, North-East Plain Zone, South Zone, Central Zone and North-Hill Zone) for 5 crops - (Mungbean, Urdbean, Lentil, Lathyrus, Rajmash & Pea) grown in 3 seasons – (Kharif, Rabi, Spring & Summer) of  MULLaRP in India. The system generates quick and accurate reports which provide ranking of varieties based on particular trial in a specific zone for average yield performance and other related characters independently.

A web–based data submission and information retrieval system can be accessed efficiently through URL: (Fig.1). The system is being satisfactorily used since last 6 months and has significantly reduced the manpower and processing time required for compilation and preparation of annual report.
