 Mango Fruit fly biology,nature of damage and symptoms

S.N: Bactrocera dorsalis (Tephritidae: Diptera)

  • Serious and regular pest affects export potential of mango
  • Infestation starts from fruit setting stage (April-May)
  • Serious in storage condition also

Appearance:

  • Adult light brown with transparent wings
  • Maggots are white and jumping in nature


Biology:

  • Banana shaped white eggs in batches (2-11)are inserted into the fruit with the help of ovipositor
  • Maggots drop to ground or drop along with rotten fruit and pupate in soil
  • Pupation in the soil

Life Cycle:IP- 1-2 days; LP- 15-20 days; PP- 6-8 days

Nature of Damage:

  • Maggots feed in pulp from inside

Damage symptoms:

  • Rotting and premature dropping of fruits
