Common name: Wild oat
Scientific Name: Avena fatua
Description
- Wild oat belongs to the poaceae family and during initial growth stage wild oat plants are resemble with wheat and cultivated oat.
- It is a highly competitive weed and its plant is taller than wheat (120 cm).
- Panicles are composed of green spikelets and each spikelet have 2 to 3 brownish green flowers.
- After maturity seeds shatter and have very long persistence in the soil.
- It prefers well-drained light textured soil and favorable temperature for germination is 20-25°C.
Control Measure
- Pre-emergence spray of pendimethalin 30 EC(Stomp) @ at the rate of 3.3 liter/ha in 500-750 litres of water at the time of 2-3 days after sowing. There should be good soil moisture for better performance.
- Post-emergence application of isoproturon at the rate of 1.0kg/ha in 250-300 litres of water at the time of 30-35 days after sowing.
