bio-control of pod borer

Pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera is a polyphagous pest of numerous important food and commercial crops. Tomato and chickpea are heavily infested by it. Bio-cntrol of it can be achieved in the following ways:

  1. Apply Bacillus thuringiensis formulations (B.thuringiensis var. Kurstaki) formulations available in market.
  2. Apply 250-300LE H. armigera NPV mixed with charcoal paste, teepol(surfctant) and jaggery solution(sticker+phagostimulant) during dusk or evening.
  3. fungal biopesticides like Beauveria or Metarrhizium are also effective but temp and moisture regime should be accurate for their full effectivity.
  4. Use of bio-control agents like Trichogramma pretiosum, Chrysoperla carnea are also reported to be successful in many places.
  5. Conservation of local fauna of Carcellia illota(fly) and Campoletis chloridae (Hymenopteran) helps a lot.
  6. install bird perch (tree branch, cross bamboo stake etc.) to allow Blue jay or Black drongo to see and hunt larvae all day long.
  7. Intercrop chickpea or tomato with mustard, safflower, coriander, marigold to attract numerous predators and parasitoids in the field.

Bio control

Metarhizium , Buvaria, NPV etc are highly effective against borers. Once they ingest these, mortality rate will be higher and faster.
