ABOUT US: Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (http://igau.edu.in) This University has evolved over the decades from colonial times when the British set up an agricultural research station at Raipur known as Labhandi Farm. The site has seen several establishments over the years such as the MPRRI(Madhya Pradesh Rice Research Institute) in 1974, a Rice Research Station had been setup in the mid sixties . The Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya was established in 1964 at Jabalpur as a State Agricultural University. Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur was established in January 1987 after bifurcating from Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur . From that time to date, the University has expanded several fold. The basic objectives of the University are as follows:
- Developing educational and research networks in agriculture and allied field for the state agriculture and allied sectors
- Undertaking basic, applied and adaptive research to evolve appropriate solutions and technologies.
- Diversification of crops and farming systems.
- Collaboration with the State, National and International research institutions.
- Imparting knowledge and education to the people engaged in agriculture and allied fields.
EDUCATION/ACADEMICS: The University has the following four faculties at present
- Faculty of Agriculture
- Faculty of Dairy Technology
- Faculty of Veterinary Science and animal Husbandry
- Faculty of Agricultural Engineering
The Faculty of Agriculture has about five constituent colleges and about thirteen affiliated colleges spread over the State of Chhatishgarh. The academic programs spread over eighteen depts. and areas are as follows:
B.Sc (Ag) M.Sc(Ag) PhD(Ag)
The Faculty of Dairy technology operates through the college of dairy technology offers four year undergraduate programme leading to B. Tech. degree in dairy technology. The four year degree includes six months in plant training. Extensive training is imparted to the students of B.Tech. in the areas of Dairy Technology, Dairy Chemistry, Dairy Engineering, Dairy Microbiology, Dairy Husbandry, Dairy Economics, Statistics and Management. The college also offers PG programme leading to M.Tech. (DE/DT) and M.Sc. Dairying) DM/DC. The Faculty of Veterinary Sc and Animal Husbandry consists of 17 depts which offer a five year UG program leading to B.VSc & AH. It consists of internship also. 10 of the 17 depts offer a two year PG program leading to M.VSc & AH. The Faculty of Agricultural Engineering consists of one constituent college and two affiliated colleges. The following depts. are an integral part of the faculty.
a) Department of Farm Machinery and Power
b) Department of Soil and Water Engineering
c) Department of Agriculture Processing and Food Engineering
d) Department of Animal Energy in Agriculture

RESEARCH: The research activities of the University are carried out through the Directorate of Research Services and considerable progress ha s been made during the last five years. Results have started coming in several fields such as bio-fertilizers, crop management, water management and agricultural implements.
Owing to the complexities involved in the field of applied agriculture inter institutional collaboration becomes necessary and links have to be established with both Govt and Non Govt agencies both within and outside the country. To maintain high standards in research to solve complex problems in rainfed conditions the university has found the need to reach out to the International collaborators and funding agencies. Associations with such institutes are International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Manila, Philippines, Rockefeller Foundation, New York, USA, International Plant Genetic Resources Institute, Washington DC, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Asian Development Bank (ADB) Asian Rice Biotechnology Network (ARBN) of IRRI etc. The University has also linkages with the Industry on a reciprocal basis. The Industry sponsors student s of the University and in turn provides facilities for testing of products and research advise to the Industry. Campus interviews are conducted and many of PG students are selected to work in the fields and offices of the company.
EXTENSION: The Extension activities are undertaken by the Directorate of Extension services. The basic objectives of the Directorate are to provide acceptable and workable technologies to the farmers and to give a feedback to the research personnel regarding the problems of the farming community and provide solutions
To achieve the above objectives the following components exists with the Directorate of extension:
- Agricultural Technology Information Centre (ATIC) at Raipur
- Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) at Ambikapur, Bilaspur, Bhatapara, Dhamtari, Durg, Jagdalpur, Janjgir, Mahasamund, Raigarh.
- A communication center at Raipur.
- Farmers Training Centers at all KVKs and main campus, Raipur.
These components carry out several critical and necessary activities in order to sustain the extension activities. Farm advisory services, training and information cum communication form the core functions.
