Purpose of description
I C G V - S M 83005 is a h i g h - y i e l d i n g groundnut breeding l i n e adapted to the southern A f r i c a n region. It was released in 1995 as Chipego for cultivation in low- and medium-rainfall areas of Zambia. It also performed well in other countries of the region. Origin and development
I C G V - S M 83005 (also k n o w n as I C G M S 5) originated f r om a single plant selection made in 1978 at I C R I S A T A s i a Center, India, in the F4 generation of a bulk-selectedpopulation of a cross between Robut 33-1 and NC Ac 2698. The plant was progenyrowed in the next generation, and phenotypically similar plants were selected and bulked at harvest. This bulk was advanced to subsequent generations by b u l k i ng phenotypically similar plants at harvest u n t i l the b u l k stabilized. Its f u l l pedigree is (Robut 33-1 x NC Ac 2 6 9 8 ) F 2 - B 2 - P 1 - B 1 - B 1 - B 1 - B 1 - B 1 - B 1 - B 1 . I C G V - S M 83005 was introduced i n the Southern A f r i c a n Development Commun i t y ( S A D C ) / I C R I S A T Groundnut Project, M a l a w i , in 1982 a s an advanced breeding l i n e . After i n i t i a l evaluation i n the 1982/83 season i n M a l a w i , i t was included i n the regional groundnut varietal t r i a l of the SADC region in 1983/84 as ICGMS 5. Subsequendy, it was designated I C G V - S M 83005. After extensive evaluation in regional, national, and o n - f a rm trials, i t was released in Zambia. |
