GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR AGRICULTURE

Posted in

General recommendation in agriculture very importance for maximum crop production and sustainable agriculture.

 I.   Agronomic practices-

  • Summer ploughing at after harvested in Rabi crop .
  • Procure the seeds and fertilizers for timely sowing of kharif crops.
  • Seeds of crop varieties (short, medium and long duration) should match the crop growing duration.
  • Procure fresh seeds of hybrids / composites every year from Government approved sources only.
  • Available FYM/ compost may be collected & applied to the fields before sowing crops.
  • Chemical fertilizers should be band placed by the side of crop rows at 1" - 2" depth. Do not broadcast fertilizers.
  • Cotton seed should be treated with dilute Sulphuric acid @ 1 litre/10 kg seed to remove the fibre from the seed for better germinate
  • Seed should be treated with recommended bio-fertiliser and fungicide. For the control of seed borne and soil borne diseases of groundnut and other kharif crops, treat the seed with thirum or mancozeb or captan 3 g per 1 kg seed.
  • Provide supplemental irrigation, if needed, to the rainfed / irrigated dry crops wherever possible.
  • In place of upland rice, minor millets, maize, blackgram and sesame can be grown. In place of long duration varieties of rice, prefer early and medium varieties in places like Bastar plateau and Northern hills.
  • Recommended intercropping systems should be adopted for increased land productivity, more income and minimizing the risk against drought.
  • Do not take up plant protection measures under continuous rainfall / cloudy conditions.

Climate-

      a.  Rainfall: Rainfall during the last week was excess / normal in many parts of the country except in Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Bihar plains, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, eastern most states, Marathwada, South and Coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu & Pondichery, where it was deficient / scanty during the period.

Widespread rainfall with very heavy falls at some places and extremely heavy rainfall  (more than 250 mm) at isolated places in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Orissa caused floods.  Standing kharif crops were damaged  in large areas due to these floods.

Regular dewatering may be carried out in susceptible crop fields, viz., maize, short duration pulses, etc., in case of heavy rainfall or water logged conditions.

 b.      Specific recommendations:  The excessive rainfall conditions may persist for a couple of days. After the receding of flood water, the following measures may be adopted:

o        Try to drain out the standing water from the fields immediately.

o        Thereafter take up earthing up in the fields and top dressing with moderate level of nitrogen to supplement the nutritional requirement of cereal crops.

o        Location specific recommendations of the university may be adopted.

o        Consult the Veterinarian for any likely out break of animal diseases.

  II.       Soil and Water Conservation

  • Sowing should be done across the slope or along the contours to minimize soil and water losses, particularly in hill slopes / terraced lands.
  • Bund the field for more soil moisture storage, ground water recharge and to prevent runoff.
  • Adopt disc harrowing or ploughing with country plough after each effective shower to conserve moisture in the current fallow lands.

In areas, which received heavy to very heavy rainfall, trenching is recommended on community basis with heavy duty trenchers after the r
