Cotton Fetches Rs. 3700-4400 per quintal at Harvest in Raichur Market

Cotton is majorly grown in Raichur region of Karnataka. Farmers in this
region are waiting for the onset of monsoon to take up sowing operation. But,
because of uncertainty of prices of cotton at the time of harvest, farmers are in
confusion regarding sowing of this crop. Hence, in order to assist and help the
farmers through predicting the prices of cotton at the time of harvesting of the
crop, the Domestic and Export Market Intelligence cell, Department of
Agribusiness Management, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad has
taken up a study.
Study has been taken up in forecasting the prices of cotton by using the past
20 years monthly modal price data. The forecast prices are further fine tuned by
obtaining the valuable opinions of agricultural scientists, traders of the crop,
progressive farmers in the region etc.
Depending upon the forecast prices of cotton by using 20 years monthly
price data and further by keeping in view of valuable suggestions of traders,
agricultural scientists and progressive farmers, the prices of cotton is expected to
hover around Rs. 3700 to Rs. 4400 per quintal during the months of December
(2013) and February (2014) from the current price of Rs. 3900 per quintal in the
month of June. Farmers are advised to bring dried, cleaned and pure white cotton
to markets, since it fetches higher prices. Neat packing while shifting to market
saves sizeable amount of the crop being wasted. So, farmers are advised to keep
these points in their mind while producing the crop and preparing it for the
market.
