International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics
Purpose of Description
ICSH 153 is a hybrid bred at ICRISAT Center. It was released (as CSH 11) in 1986 by the Government of India Central Subcommittee on Crop Standards, Notification, and Release of Varieties, for cultivation in all areas in India where rainy-season sorghum is grown. It can also be cultivated as an irrigated crop in the postrainy season.

Trials conducted during the rainy season of 2003 in Mahbubnagar and Ranga Reddy districts, Andhra Pradesh, India, revealed the higher profitability of improved sorghum cultivars (CSH 16, CSV 15, PSV 16 and S 35) compared to local cultivars. Sixty-nine sorghum growers participated in this study.
This report analyzes the prospects for expanding commercial utilization of these crops. On the basis of a utilization survey, a review of price data, and discussions with industry representatives, it appears that the best opportunity for expanding the use of sorghum is in the opaque beer brewing industry. A target of 75% substitution over the next 5 years would create a demand for 1800 t per year of high quality white sorghum.
This study is based upon field work undertaken in mid-1998 in the context of the project 'sorghum in India: technical, policy, economic, and social factors affecting improved utilization', which was funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) and jointly undertaken by ICRISAT, NRCS, and NRI. The main industries using sorghum in India are the animal feed sector, alcohol distilleries, and starch industries. Only rainy-season sorghum is used for industrial purposes.
